How this work was made
Many families ask when first commissioning a memorial portrait, "Wouldn't a stiff expression suit a memorial better?" No.
The expression families remember of their parents is not a stiff blank one. The everyday laugh, the lively likeness, the smile they had when looking at grandchildren — that expression is what brings the deepest comfort to mourners and to the family themselves. From 32 years of casework, the most heartfelt feedback always comes from natural-smile memorial portraits.
This is also validated on broadcast. This work preserves the original smile while finishing with suit attire and a warm background. Sharpness was lifted but the natural quality of the expression was never smoothed away. What is refined: background, attire, skin texture. What is never touched: the smile, eye-corner lines, the original expression.
