There is no single right answer for memorial portrait clothing. Suit, shirt, cardigan, hanbok — whatever the person actually wore most often reads the most natural. The portrait made at a funeral hall is almost always a suit, but for someone who rarely wore one, a suit memorial can feel unfamiliar to the family.
Studio Davinci reviews two directions on top of a 32-year memorial standard (since 1994): keep the suit, or change to everyday wear. Families weigh four things — what they usually wore, which outfit the family pictures first, where the portrait will be kept (a funeral hall suits a suit; a 49-day rite or columbarium allows everyday wear), and how clothing tone matches the background.
In this case the original was a black suit with a red striped tie. The family said a cardigan felt more like everyday, so we moved to a grey cable cardigan with a spring-garden background — changing only the clothing and background while keeping the original face and expression untouched. The suit version was shown in the same free preview; the family chose the casual one and said, "That's how they really looked."
