Binggrae × Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs · 2024

For Korean Liberation Day 2024, Binggrae and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs ran the 'First Liberation Photographs' campaign — digital restoration giving 87 Korean independence activists who never had a proper liberation photograph the dignity of one. The work ran across Parnas Mall outdoor placements, printed booklets, and digital channels.
Studio Davinci participated in the project, restoring and compositing for several of the activists. The Parnas Mall outdoor campaign material featuring activist Kang Seok-dae was one of them.
Restoration of historical figures carries responsibility beyond simple retouching. Period dress code, historical context, the figure's documented bearing, the average Korean skin tone of the liberation era — all referenced against 32 years of data in producing a single record worth carrying forward. Where auto-AI generalizes Imperial-era military uniforms as "khaki green," Davinci verified the actual color as "kokubo-iro (mustard ochre brown)" through historical reference.
The techniques refined in this 87-portrait project apply identically to ordinary family memorial and restoration commissions.
